Billie Eilish Stands Up to Haters: Let Women Exist

Billie Eilish Responds to Her Critics

Billie Eilish has no time for haters. The 21-year-old, seven-time Grammy winner, Oscar winner, and youngest Coachella headliner, has clearly had enough of the social media haters who live to criticize. On Saturday, on her Instagram Stories, she cleared her throat to respond to “some comments I see sometimes.” Given the ephemeral nature of the platform, we can no longer link directly to the specific comments. But thankfully, many caught them in time. People reported that, alongside an image of her rolling her eyes, she wrote: “I spent the first 5 years of my career being absolutely criticized by you fools cause I was a boy and dressed how I dressed and was constantly told I would be more sexy if I acted more like a girl and now when I feel comfortable enough to wear something remotely feminine or flirtatious, y’all say I ‘changed’ and I’m ‘sellin out’… and ‘what happened to her’ but it’s the same girl, just like all the other, bla bla.” She added: “Y’all boys are so dumb. LOL I can be both things, f*ckin idiots. Let women exist.”

Women Can Be Interested in Multiple Things

Alongside another image of her smiling, she wrote: “Did y’all know women are multi-dimensional!!!??? shocking I know!! believe it or not women can be interested in multiple things.” She continued, in the caption of images of her making hand gestures, that “femininity is not synonymous with weakness”!!!! Omg?! Mind blowing, right? Who would’ve thought?? And also totally unheard of and crazy to want to express yourself differently at different times. What were the initial comments that set off such a reaction? We’re not interested in looking for them and amplifying them! If you don’t like an artist’s new song, fine, don’t listen to it. If you want to start criticizing their very existence—especially when it comes to a young woman who has spoken eloquently and frequently about body image—you deserve to be called “idiots” on Instagram.

Billie Eilish’s Comments on Body Image

In an Elle interview last year, Eilish spoke of her frustration with some people who want her to keep the look she had when they first discovered her. “I lost 100,000 followers just from my boobs,” she said. “I’m still the same human. I’m not just different Barbies with different heads,” she added. In a New York Times profile of her family in 2020, it might have been her mother Maggie Baird who said: “The internet is an idiot.” V.F. reached out to Eilish’s reps to see if she has anything else to say to her detractors, but hopefully she’s gotten it all off her chest and moved on.
