Gerard Depardieu’s alleged victim returns: Why she went back after 1st rape

Charlotte Arnould speaks out

This Tuesday, May 23rd, it was to journalist Aurélie Casse on BFMTV that actress Charlotte Arnould agreed to open up about her experience with Gérard Depardieu. After the disclosure of a long Mediapart investigation last April, coming back in particular on her complaint, the name of the sacred monster of cinema was then tarnished by a dark affair. This day, Charlotte Arnould decided to speak openly about this story, and reveals in particular why she accepted to see Gérard Depardieu again after the first rape he inflicted on her. In the office of the actress’s lawyer, she recounts the rapes she suffered when she was 22 years old. She puts the context back, recalling that Gérard Depardieu is a friend of her father, director of a hotel in Jougnes in the Doubs and whom she met in the context of a shoot. “He held me in his arms when I was a baby,” she insists.

The second meeting

A week after the first rape, which took place on August 7, 2018, she sees him again. “I know something serious has happened,” Charlotte Arnould confesses. “On August 7, I really thought I was dead, my life was over, those words became me. […] But I think it will take me a while to understand what happened. A kind of denial of protection, a fog.” “I know what happened, but recognizing it is so painful, it’s so violent,” the actress tells Aurélie Casse. “And I think I’m also going there in the dynamic of telling him what happened. I have the feeling that I will be able to tell him ‘this, this, this’, to tell him the four truths really.” Unfortunately, the scenario that will unfold is quite different, and much more dramatic. “And in fact, not at all,” she admits.

The aftermath

“And really, I think it will take me a while to understand what happened until I go to file a complaint,” explains Charlotte Arnould. It is at the request of Gérard Depardieu that she will therefore go to meet him a second time. “All that happens is at his own initiative,” she says on BFMTV. In April 2023, it was thirteen women who accused the sacred monster of cinema of sexual violence, who “formally denies” all the accusations that could be considered criminal. The young actress Charlotte Arnould hopes that some of these victims will follow her example and file a complaint. Gérard Depardieu denied the facts through his lawyers. He is presumed innocent of the facts he is accused of until the end of the trial.
