Tributes to Jane Birkin
Since July 16, 2023, tributes have been pouring in since the day Jane Birkin took her last breath at the age of 76. The singer and actress was found dead at her Paris home by her caretaker.
Honoring the Birkin Family
Two women were eventually honored by the great photographer Jean-Marie Périer, after being criticized for paying tribute to the performer of Melody Nelson with a picture where she posed with the child she had with Serge Gainsbourg… but not her other daughters. “Some have allowed themselves to make unpleasant remarks because I had not mentioned Lou Doillon, I finally managed to see on Insta this beautiful photo of Jane and her daughters. Of course, this dear Kate Barry, who passed away a few years earlier, is missing,” Jean-Marie Périer wrote in the caption of this sublime photograph taken by Lachlan Bailey for the Christmas edition of Vogue Paris in December 2018 and January 2019. He also clarified his relationship with the Birkin family: “Of course, this dear Kate Barry, who passed away a few years earlier, is missing. But at least I tried to address the whole family, without hiding from you that the one I was closest to was Serge, with whom I did nothing but drink.”
Reactions to the Photo
Famous photographer, among others, for his collaboration with Salut les copains but also his countless shots of stars from the 1960s to today, Jean-Marie Périer had thus been one of the first to react to the disappearance of Jane Birkin with a photo by Michèle Laurent for Getty. “It’s not to insist but I find it can’t be more moving this photo published today on the Instagram of the newspaper Le Monde [it is actually the Figaro, as the writer Tristane Banon pointed out, ed.]. Yet I loved Kate very much and I never met Lou.” This earned him remarks such as “a photo of Jane alone would have been appropriate”. Other followers supported the photographer who has as his biological father the artist Henri Salvador and was recognized by the actor François Périer: “It’s complicated to satisfy all your followers and to repeat the same things over and over again, isn’t it dear Mr. Périer… This photo is very beautiful.”
