Royal Baby Surrogacy: Danish & Greek Godparents

A Special Union

Prince Frederick and Mary of Denmark were the godparents at the wedding of Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg – a first degree cousin of Frederick – and Princess Carina (born Carina Axelsson) last June. It was necessary to go to court to challenge the grandfather’s will, which stipulated that the future bride had to be noble and Protestant to join his family. After overcoming the difficulties, the two were able to say “yes” in an intimate wedding and immediately thought of becoming parents.

Celebrating the Baby’s Third Month

They have passed the 50 years and have resorted to surrogacy to give birth to the little Gustav Albrecht de Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg on May 26. This Saturday, coinciding with the third month of the baby, the family celebrated the baptism in the chapel of the Castle of Berleburg, the same place where Gustav and Carina got married, a palace owned by the prince located in the German city of Bad Berleburg, in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Godparents and Family Members

Now it is not the heir prince and the princess of Denmark who have baptized the baby, but it is their eldest son, Christian, who will turn 18 next October and who has assumed for the first time the role of godfather with his godson, Gustav Albrecht. He will not be alone in this new role. He will be accompanied by another five godparents. The list is completed by Princess Theodora of Greece – first degree cousin of Prince Gustav – by Ellen Hillingsø, Arabella Gaggero and by Princes Franz-Albrecht of Oettingen-Spielberg and Carl-Anton of Waldeck and Pyrmont. Princess Benedikte, sister of Queen Margrethe of Denmark (and of Anna Maria of Greece), together with her daughters, Princesses Alexandra and Nathalie and their families, as well as the Danish princes Frederick and Mary, attended the baptism and posed for the official photos.
