Nikolai Denmark move Australia with fiancee.

Count Nikolai of Monpezat’s Semester Abroad

It has been a busy few months for Count Nikolai of Monpezat (formerly Prince Nikolai of Denmark). In the autumn of 2022, his grandmother, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, announced that he would be stripped of his princely title; the transition became effective in January; then his father, Prince Joachim, announced that he would be moving to the United States with his wife and two younger children. Now more changes are in store for Count Nikolai, 23, the eldest of Joachim’s four children. He is about to move to Australia with his charming girlfriend, Benedikte Thoustrup, for a semester abroad at Copenhagen Business School. The couple will study at the University of Technology (UTS) in Sydney from August 1 to November 30 and is reportedly looking for an apartment in town. The news was confirmed to the Danish news outlet, B.T. by a spokesperson for his mother, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.

Count Nikolai’s Royal Connections

Count Nikolai of Monpezat is seventh in line to the Danish throne and the eldest grandchild of Queen Margrethe of Denmark, who recently recovered from back surgery at the beginning of the year. He and Count Felix, 20, are the children of Prince Joachim of Denmark (Queen Margrethe’s youngest son) and his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg. Their younger half-siblings, Count Henrik and Countess Athena, come from Joachim’s second marriage to his current wife, Princess Marie of Denmark. Nikolai is said to have started dating the 23-year-old Benedikte Thoustrup in 2018 and now lives with her in Copenhagen.

Benedikte Thoustrup’s Background

Benedikte is the owner of a Danish hair accessories brand, BénéSoie, for which she designs silk headbands and biodegradable clips along with her mother and grandmother. The glamorous couple has already studied abroad in the past: in 2021 they lived in Paris on exchange for a semester, but Australia marks a much bigger step for the two. Nikolai’s father, Prince Joachim of Denmark, also spent some time in Australia when he was younger, working on a farm in Wagga Wagga from 1986 to 1987 when he was 18. Nikolai’s aunt, Crown Princess Mary, is Australian and spent some holiday time in the country with her husband, Crown Prince Frederik (Queen Margrethe’s eldest son), and their four children in 2015.
