It has only been a few days since an apparently painful dispute over parenting between Elon Musk and his ex-girlfriend Grimes spilled out onto social media. But as the publication of a new biography of the controversial billionaire approaches, more surprising details about Musk’s life continue to emerge. The latest detail, though less incendiary than the news that he had allegedly halted a Ukrainian military effort, still raises eyebrows: Elon would have not two, but three children with Grimes, bringing Musk’s earthly progeny to at least ten.
Walter Isaacson’s Biography
This latest detail is provided by biographer Walter Isaacson, whose close relationship with the X (formerly Twitter) owner includes years as his shadow and bizarre morning messages. Isaacson’s book on the mogul, Elon Musk, is set to be released on September 12th and, while various outlets have extracted an excerpt, the New York Times seems to have the first review. Within this assessment, Grimes is referred to as “the mother of three of Musk’s children (the existence of a third, Techno Mechanicus, nicknamed Tau, has hitherto been kept under wraps),” a surprising information if one considers that, just last week, Grimes had tweeted “you need to tell Elon that I need to see my son or respond to my lawyer” before deleting the post. When Grimes’ post was first noticed, people (including myself) had speculated that the child she was referring to was three year-old X Æ A-12; the couple also share a daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, born in December 2021.
Elon’s Offer of Sperm Donation
According to the NYT, “Musk did not tell Grimes that he had just fathered two twins with a subordinate” when Exa was born, bringing the number of his living biological children to nine. (Another of Musk’s children, Nevada Alexander Musk, died in infancy in 2002). According to Shivon Zilis, the mother of the twins in question, Musk “really wanted people who were smart to have kids,” Isaacson says, and “offered to be her sperm donor” so that “the kids would be genetically his.” But at some point, after the donation, Musk—or his genetic material—was apparently returned to Grimes. “Isaacson’s book reveals that Musk’s former girlfriend, the musician Claire Boucher, whose stage name is Grimes, had a new child last year,” reports CBS Sunday Morning, suggesting that this baby, the tenth of which we have record, was born after the twins.
