Cannes 2023 could be the most remarkable edition yet. On the Croisette, the American divas are back, possibly in response to the post-pandemic situation or the ban on selfies introduced in recent years. The program starts today, May 16th, with the opening ceremony, and the return of one of the most iconic stars of all time, Johnny Depp. The actor has a long history in Cannes, especially during his relationship with Vanessa Paradis. After the legal battle with Amber Heard, Depp is back with a bang, inaugurating the seventy-sixth edition with a movie based on the story of Jeanne Du Barry, the favorite of the King. His daughter, Lily Rose Depp, will also join him on the red carpet, starring in The Idol, an out of competition series co-produced by The Weeknd.

Michael Douglas, accompanied by his wife Catherine Zeta Jones, will also be present at the opening ceremony. The actor will receive the prestigious Golden Palm Award for his career. The international premiere of Indiana Jones and the Time of Destiny, the fifth chapter of the saga starring Harrison Ford, 80 years old, is also eagerly anticipated. Joining him will be Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, and Johnny Depp.

The Cannes 2023 Festival will also see the return of Leonardo DiCaprio, who has been absent since 2019. He is expected to attend the Amfar gala, hidden behind his famous hat. Pedro Almodóvar is also back, presenting his short Strange Way of Life with Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal. Quentin Tarantino, who has brought his best works to Cannes in the past, will join the festival on the last day, May 25th, as a guest of the Quinzaine des Cinéastes 2023.

Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman will star in Todd Haynes’ drama, May December, which is in competition. The star-studded cast of Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City includes Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Maya Hawke, Matt Dillon, and Rita Wilson.

Italian guests will also be present, with three films in competition. Nanni Moretti’s The Sun of the Future stars Margherita Buy, Silvio Orlando, and Barbora Bobulova. In Marco Bellocchio’s Kidnapped, Fabrizio Gifuni, Paolo Pierobon, Barbara Ronchi, Enea Sala, Leonardo Maltese, and Filippo Timi appear. Alice Rohrwacher’s Chimera features an international couple, Josh O’Connor and Carol Duarte.

Cannes 2023 Festival promises to be an unforgettable event, with Johnny Depp, the iconic star, making a triumphant return.
