Christian Prudhomme: A Discreet Man Behind the Scenes
One of the most famous faces of the Tour de France, Christian Prudhomme has been brilliantly directing one of the planet’s most important sporting events for over 16 years now. Before becoming director of the Tour de France, the 62 year old man had a first life as a sports journalist, first at France Télévisions, before taking part in the creation of L’Équipe TV in 1998. In January 2004, he became Jean-Marie Leblanc’s assistant on the Tour de France, then took his place on February 1st, 2007. Since then, Christian Prudhomme has been unanimously appreciated and viewers have become accustomed to seeing him give the start of the stages from the roof of his car. Although he is very popular, the native of Paris remains a very discreet man who does not reveal much about his private life.

Yet, in an interview given to the Journal du dimanche in July 2022, he said more about his character and in particular towards his wife, Catherine. Obviously very busy all month of July, he now returns home a little later due to the Tour de France women, which postpones the reunion with the one who shares his life. “Anyway, we only get together after several days, because she says I’m completely disoriented when I come back,” Christian Prudhomme joked. Visibly very energetic, the former journalist is not very easy to live with at the end of the Tour de France and with such pressure every year, it can be understood.
The 2021 Tour de France
This year again, the Grande Boucle offers a great show to cycling enthusiasts, especially with the battle raging at the top of the standings between Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. The fight promises to be fierce until the end between the Dane and the Slovene, but it could also be very tight for the places of honor. Among the French chances of doing well in the ranking, there is the surprise of last year, David Gaudu, even if his performances are below this year, which earned him some reprimands from an illustrious French cyclist.
